Japan Travel Guide is an independent guide to traveling Japan by season — built for people who’d rather plan one trip carefully than skim ten “top 10” lists.
Why we built this
Most travel advice treats Japan as one destination. It isn’t. Tokyo in a heatwave, Kyoto under maple leaves, and Hokkaido under fresh powder are close to three different countries sharing a passport stamp. We started this site because the trip that works depends entirely on when you go and what you’re chasing — cherry blossoms, quiet temples, festival season, or a week of skiing — and most guides don’t make that trade-off clear before you’ve already booked flights.
So instead of one generic itinerary, we organize everything around the two decisions that actually shape a trip: which region, and which season.
What you’ll find here
- Destination guides — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hokkaido, Hiroshima & Miyajima, and Okinawa, each covering what makes it worth the detour.
- Seasonal breakdowns — what to expect, and what to plan around, in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
- Signature experiences — tea ceremonies, ryokan stays, omakase counters, the shinkansen, matsuri festivals and snow onsen.
- Practical trip notes — rail passes, booking timelines, cash vs. card, and the small etiquette habits that make travel smoother.
Our approach
We favor depth over volume. Every region and season page is written to answer one question honestly: is this the right fit for the trip you actually want? That means we’ll tell you when a season isn’t worth the crowds, or when a “must-see” destination might not suit your pace — because a shorter list you can trust beats a longer one you have to second-guess.
Japan rewards travelers who look closely. So do good itineraries.
